Happy Easter Egg!

by Nisha | April 12 2009 |

For Alex, Easter is all about eggs. As it would be for most 3 year olds i’d imagine! But he also feels the need to include it in his greeting, i got a very joyous “Happy Easter Egg!!” this morning- very cute!

We are lucky in that we get to celebrate 2 Easters every year. The Catholic version and the Orthodox version. So April is a month of chocolate overload!

Usually i dye some eggs but haven’t had time to do it this year, lucky we have round 2 next week and i can dye some eggs for greek easter. Traditionally the eggs are dyed red or blue and you must select an egg from the bowl and knock the top of your egg against the top of somone elses egg in an effort to crack their egg, but not your own.

Last year i made these eggs:

Easter

I drew the letters corresponding to each family members name, in a gothic style font on some clear adhesive address labels. Cut them out with a scalpel and stuck them on an egg. Then the eggs were boiled in the dye mixture and after they had cooled i peeled off the sticker to reveal the letters. There wee small air bubbles trapped under the sticker which leaked the dye into some areas but i think it gives it a bit of a grungy old-world look. So we all had fun cracking these ones. Of course if you win the cracking game your egg is supposed to be the lucky one.

This year im going to dye some eggs with silk ties, but i have to venture into some op-shops to get some cheap ties i can rip up for my project! Stay tuned!
