Vamps… grrr argh!**

by Nisha | April 8 2009 |

Now just to clarify, i’ve been a fan of vampire books, movies and TV shows for a long time. Buffy, Lost Boys, Interview with a Vampire and more recently Tru Blood etc. I do like how each writer takes their own liberties with the vampire rules on garlic, staking, sunlight, crucifixes and holy water, how all the visual depictions vary from plain ol’ canine fangs to the snake like over-bite that the tru blood fx team are keen on.

Hubby sat me down to watch Twilight a few weeks ago (was i the only one laughing hysterically at the ‘running up the tree’ scene) and after it ended i just gawked at him.

I DO NOT like chick-flicks, least of all teen based chick-flicks. I like Chick-lit even less.

Then he further horrifies me and says “the books are better”*. This was based on a book?! And is more than one of them?! A bestseller, seriously?!

Now, everywhere i go where there is a gathering of women, I keep hearing them swoon over that pasty ‘Edward’ and the scowly faced awkward girl. The movie was awful- 2 hours of my ‘me time’ gone!! And if i hear one more person say “but the books are better” i will club them. With the damn book!

OK rage aside, I have resisted reading the book because of the lame movie & out of fear of becoming one of the other sheep running off the cliff face, but im also mildly curious. Can you give me one good reason why i should read it? (hint: dont go down the ‘love story’ road, thats whats making me so anti)

*Yes, he has read all the books. He is a big Anne Rice fan and claimed to pick the book up in hope that it would follow in the same vein. Then apparently he got sucked into the story and HAD to read all 4 books!  But im not supposed to discuss that because it may compromise his masculinity! Should i tell him theres a draft of book 5 online?

**and if you dont know where the ‘grr argh’ comes from… im silently shaking my head at you.

Well, I can’t help, because I did enjoy the books, and the movie…but I can see where you’re coming from! :-)

(Love the Grr Argh line BTW!)

Haven’t read them, haven’t seen the movie and don’t get the hype.. but I will watch & rewatch Interview with a Vampire and Lost Boys quite happily.

it took me to the last line to get the picture. I like it when he cried ;) I wouldn’t put any stake (pun intended) in the movie, it was crap, but I love the books, she really isn’t the best writer, but she has a way of creating imagery I guess.

You know if I read the first book of a series, I have to read the rest even if its shit.

I can’t Help it, I’m special that way.

Plus I like vampire novels… Its not gay in any way.

I saw your photo and said Grrr argh immediately!! I’ve got to admit the movie did not translate to screen as well as it could have and the tree… oh dear!

I did enjoy the books though, mainly because I’m a Buffy/Angel freak and thought I could get some satisfaction from Twilight. I enjoyed the books, they were light and a bit of escapism – but the 3rd one really pissed me off.

Maybe you could go audio book Nish? I read them this way, a little strange at first but ok.

I’m just about to finish the final book Nisha. Trust me, I’m a shocker for deliberately avoiding the latest crazes. (I’ve still not read or watched any Harry Potter, for solely that reason!) Twilight series is not well written at all – I found the first one was particularly poorly written. But… there’s just something that keeps you turning the pages. (Maybe the hope that it’ll get better? hehe…) I would put them in the same category as Buffy actually. Was never a fan. Definitely written for teens. But… yeah… addictive. Once you’ve started, you will finish (hey Mr Agi?) ;)
