My genius invention!

by Nisha | May 29 2009 |

Joining Blog This this week has been fun, ive been inspired to blog about something i was musing about the other day:

“If I were to invent something to make life easier or more fun for me…and WHY?” What is the bane of your existence?

The central hub of my house is the kitchen. We prepare, create, eat, craft and work in there. I swear there is a well worn groove in the wooden floor boards in front of the sink from me standing/pacing about, there for the past 7 years. Its where i shout my orders (“Stop torturing your brother with the couch cushions!”), oversee operations (“Pick up that banana peel before you give yourself concussion!”), and create sweets from (“Bring back those cake batters NOW!”).

Im constantly cleaning the floor so that crumbs and debris dont get tracked all over the house thus my invention is called the Self Cleaning Floor.

I had to photoshop it so you’d get the full visual concept- its really simple and is designed to be very streamlined and well integrated:

self-clean-floorIt would be like installing a central vaccum system but with small water pipes also connected alongside the air pipes.

How does it work?

-There would be thin vents installed in the base of the wall, near the skirting boards and a central drain.

-Air would push the covering flap on the vent open to first blow any dry debris towards the central floor drain.

-Then steam would jet out followed by a strong micro mist of water to wash the floor.

-Water would run off into the drain, taking the dirt with it and

- A final air stream would effectively dry off the surface.

- Skirtings boards would be sealed with a clear water repellant coating of resin to protect them from long term exposure to moisture.

-The size of your room would determine the number of vents along your walls, the number of drains and the air/water pressure required

-There would also be a drain cover to close off the drain when its not in use, and makes the floor look seamless. So if you had floor boards or tiles you’d get your flooring guy to cut out a rectangle the same shape as the drain, in the relevant material. The cover would sit in the recessed hole so as not to create a visible seam.

Another simplified version would be to use the central vaccum system in a clever way. There would be a vent in the kickboard (area between the cupboard and the floor) that you would sweep up all your debris towards, flick a switch, the vaccum gets activated and sucks all your dirt in.

See the little inconspicuous vent down there…

Of course, all the wall vents and kickboard vents would be coated the same colour as your walls/boards so as to maintain that streamlined look. Gotta think of the design issues first!

OK ,after proof reading that it does appear that i have been thinking about this for too long. Hahahah… too much spare time perhaps?!

Nisha, you can get those vacuum slots to sweep up to. I’ve even seen bins like that in a hairdressers when they didn’t have ducted vacuuming installed already.

I love it!! I so want one of those. Sometimes it feels like I constantly have a broom in my hand – especially when crafting with glitter is involved.
